Key to Losing Weight
Are you sitting at a weight that makes you uncomfortable? Maybe you’ve gained weight over the past couple of years and no longer enjoy how you look and feel. Perhaps your doctor has recommended weight loss to aid in your health plan. Unfortunately, losing weight isn’t easy. That is why we are sharing with you the key to losing weight in seven steps and what to do if you can’t get the results you crave!
The Key to Losing Weight in 7 Steps!
Step 1: Make a Commitment
The first key to losing weight is making a commitment to go through with the process. Long-term weight loss takes time, effort, and dedication. Therefore, before you get started, we highly recommend evaluating the motivation behind this commitment and if it is sustainable.
Step 2: Set Realistic Goals
Once you’ve committed, it is time to set a realistic goal. SMART goal setting with weight loss is crucial – you want to pick something actionable and achievable. We recommend starting with a small goal, such as exercising twice a week or only having dessert once a week. Once you have conquered and achieved those goals consistently, set a slightly more challenging goal. A key to losing weight is consistent baby steps – aiming for a high goal right off the bat can be demoralizing when it is not achieved quickly.
Step 3: Identify Your Eating Habits
A large part of weight loss is eating habits. By identifying your current habits, such as what you eat, how much you consume per sitting, your frequency of eating, etc., you get a better insight into your food intake. You can do this easily by writing down everything you consume, including food and drinks, for a few days in a food diary.
Then, consider what hurdles you may have to face – such as stress eating, access to healthy foods, time dedication, and more- as well as how you will continue moving forward without giving up.
Step 4: Educate Yourself
Next, it is time to educate yourself on proper diet and nutrition. A large factor in poor eating habits is a lack of education. While countless resources are available to read, we recommend educating yourself through trusted providers like the CDC. Alternatively, you may want to consider hiring a nutritionist to help you with meal planning.
Step 5: Find a Buddy
Staying motivated on goals that don’t see quick results can be challenging, which is why having a buddy can help. If someone in your life has weight loss goals similar to yours, you can become each other’s accountability buddy. Whether this means daily food check-ins, joint exercise plans, or trading turns in making healthy dinners, a buddy can help you stay motivated throughout the journey.
Step 6: Get Active
Exercise is key to losing weight. The American Heart Association recommends adults get 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week. We recommend you find an exercise you enjoy – whether dancing, playing tennis, swimming, etc. Finding a movement you take joy in makes exercise far more enjoyable and sustainable.
Step 7: Monitor Your Progress
Your last key to losing weight is monitoring your progress. We recommend checking your weight and body measurements weekly to track your progress but keep in mind that there will be fluctuations. It is totally normal, so try not to get discouraged!
When you check in, write down your progress, journal your feelings on the journey, and update your goals as needed!
